Cardinal Mark Coleridge, archbishop of Brisbane, has said that the Australian Capital Territory should follow the example of the state of Victoria and be an exception to the national ban on gay marriage.
It has been a day of front page and television headlines for marriage equality. The Guardian newspaper reports that the state of Victoria has now passed legislation to allow same-sex couples to marry.
In his daily e-mail to Catholic clergy, the archbishop of Brisbane has said the Australian Capital Territory should follow the example of the Victorian government and pass a law allowing gay couples to marry.
Archbishop Coleridge said the ACT should be an exception because “marriage is a union of one man and one woman”.
Archbishop Coleridge said:
“Although some might make a distinction between civil marriage, which is celebrated in churches and a number of state and federal government and religious institutions, and the sacrament of marriage which occurs only in the Catholic Church, it is important to note that marriage is not just one of the institutions which define and constitute our society but is a divine institution. The Australian Capital Territory has come to a similar conclusion.”
“In this regard, we have noted with particular interest the passage of legislation recently in the state of Victoria. Although the ACT does not have legislation to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman, the people of the ACT have voted for the introduction of same sex civil marriage, in recognition of the fact that, as a country, we recognise civil marriage to be a sacred institution.”
“I believe it is incumbent upon us to listen to those who have voted for this and to follow their example.”
