In the summer of 2008, a group of friends took an adventure to fulfill a childhood dream. "Serial Do Alone In The Dark 2008l" is a series that follows a group of friends as they journey across the United States in search for one night where they will camp together in complete darkness, guided only by their trusty flashlight. After their adventures come to an end, "Serial Do Alone In The Dark 2008l" turned into something much bigger than just another trip: It became an exploration into many aspects of human nature and communication. Originally planned as a documentary series, the project quickly evolved into something much bigger. The project opened the door to many unexpected twists and turns - some bad, some good - but all of which brought unexpected challenges. Participants now face obstacles that threaten to stop the show in its tracks. Conflicts arise, relationships are strained and each participant must now decide whether or not they will continue on their journey. Each episode will unveil new characters, new emotions and new obstacles that test everyone involved. Everyone involved in this project is basically camping out in the middle of nowhere for an entire night, with too much time to kill and nothing to do but think about how every little thing could go wrong... and how it never will. It's a dream that has been up since childhood, and for some it's a lifelong goal. The title of this documentary is taken from the poem "A Cool Retreat" by Lola Ridge which was included in her book "Sleepy Hollow". According to the documentary, the trick is to do this on an isolated island or forest instead of a beach or mountain. In order to accomplish this, you must find a flat area that's away from any other man made structures and then build a small fire. This will create a small space of "purgatory" or "hell" where you will live until the sun goes down. The author of the book, Lola Ridge, is also a noted poet and has published many notable poetry books. In several of her poems, including "A Cool Retreat," she mentions her hiding place from her husband while he was away from home on business trips. Similar to this concept in order to completely isolate yourself from modern civilization it is advisable to hide in a cave or underneath some heavy brush where light cannot reach or perhaps even burrow beneath your house or out in the forest. If you plan on doing this be sure to bring some food, clothing, shelter etc. so that you don't starve or freeze yourself to death. Also be sure to leave someone close enough to watch over you in case anything goes wrong and help arrives.
